Destination Imagination (DI) is an educational non-profit, S.T.E.M. program that teaches the creative process to 150,000 students each year across grades K—12 in more than 30 countries.
 

                                                                                         WHO?

Students in grades K—5 form teams of 2 –7 members. Each team needs a parent volunteer to act as the Team Manager to keep students on track, but not directly help develop a solution to the team’s DI challenge. Parent volunteers provide support for their child’s team and Team Manager during the season. See the many parent opportunities on the following page!

 

                                                                       WHAT?

There are seven DI Challenges to choose from each year. The areas of focus include: Technical, Scientific, Engineering, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Structural and Service Learning. There is also a non-competitive Early Learning Challenge for grades K– 2 that allows children to build social and problem solving skills.

 

                                                                      WHEN?

Each season takes place from October to March. Teams typically meet one to two hours a week to solve and practice their Challenge solutions.

 

                                                                    WHERE?

Weekly team meetings take place in the team member's homes. Tournaments take place in March at a school within the region.

 

                                                                    WHY?

Students improve in creative thinking, critical thinking, and collaborative problem solving. Participants experience the creative process, develop new friendships and learn to work together. Teams involved in DI learn higher order thinking and learn to excel in creative and critical thinking, collaborative problem solving, and project management. Students who have participated in Destination Imagination say they believe participation helped them improve their grades and do better in school, improved their self-confidence, helped them become better communicators, enhanced their respect for others, and improved their creativity and problem-solving skills.

                                                     Team Parent Volunteer Opportunities 


-Team Manager/Coach (TM)-

Supervises, plans (and prepares Instant Challenges), and guides (to 
keep team on track) all team meetings. Plays supportive role to team at meetings and 
tournament(s). Communicates supply needs to M&PC a week or more before needed. Attend one regional Team Manager meeting.   A Planner who enjoys working with kids.


-Team Coordinator (TC)-

Communicate with parents to schedule time and place for kick-off and weekly team meetings. Organized and Tech-Savvy.


-Materials and Preparation Coordinator (M&PC)-

Sourcing, collecting, and delivering materials in preparation for weekly team meetings. Helps transport props for tournament(s).  Likes to save, store, and collect random reusable items especially boxes and office supplies.

 

-Team Building & Tournament Helper (TB&TH)-

Help with Tournament duties. Helps transport team props. Attend a training for tournament responsibilities one month prior to tournament date.


-Photographer (P)-

Takes pictures of the team throughout the season. Submits a few team photos to yearbook. Optional - Attend and take pictures at a few weekly team meetings.
